How To Remove Stains From Carpet

Staining your carpet can be incredibly frustrating. Not only do stains look unsightly, but they can also ruin the aesthetic of your entire room. However, the quicker you get the stain out, the less likely it is to cause permanent damage. Read our guide on tips for removing new stains from carpets.

Dab Your Carpet With Sticky Tape

If your stain is caused by a dry substance, you need to remove as much of it as possible before you start scrubbing. This will prevent the stain from settling further into the carpet. A great way of doing this is with sticky tape- all you need to do is lightly pat it onto the mark. The tape’s sticky surface will help lift out any excess debris from your carpet and prevent further staining from occurring. This method works particularly well for dry mud and even lily pollen. Remember to keep rotating the section of tape you are using to ensure you are always going in with a clean surface.

Blot Spillages

Dealing with liquids is very different to tackling dry substances on your carpet. However, you still need to prepare the area before you can begin removing the stain. To do this, layer paper towels or kitchen roll on top of the stain and gently apply pressure. Make sure you have a plastic bag or bowl on hand to put the used paper towels in. This will prevent them from dripping throughout your house and causing additional stains. Once all excess fluid is removed from the carpet, you can begin tackling the stain. If you don’t have any paper towels, try blotting the stain with salt, and vacuum away.

Rub Washing Up Liquid On The Carpet

Washing up liquid is a tried and tested product for removing stains from carpet. Simply dispense a small amount onto your fingertip, and rub it onto the stain in a circular motion. You could also use a toothbrush to help scrub the mark if your carpet is quite hard-wearing. Leave the washing up liquid to soak in for a few minutes, before dabbing it out with cold water and a clean cloth.

Add Laundry Detergent

For really stubborn stains, you might need to take extra measures to get the mark out of your carpet. So, if washing up liquid alone is not doing the trick, combine it with a few drops of laundry detergent and cold water. After scrubbing your carpet with this mixture, leave it on the stain for at least 10 minutes before wiping away, and repeat if necessary.
